Coffee cost per cup calculator

See what each size of latte, cappuccino or flat white costs you to make, the GP you keep at your prices, and what to charge for oat milk so it doesn't eat your margin. The numbers filled in are examples: put in what you pay.

Costs you

62p

Coffee 40p, milk 13p, cup 9p

78% GP, £2.22 profit per cup

With oat milk: 91p a cup

29p more than dairy. A surcharge of 35p, once VAT is taken out, covers it.

Costs you

70p

Coffee 40p, milk 19p, cup 11p

77% GP, £2.38 profit per cup

With oat milk: £1.14 a cup

44p more than dairy. A surcharge of 55p, once VAT is taken out, covers it.

Costs are what you pay suppliers. GP is worked out on the price without VAT, because VAT goes to HMRC.

What goes into the cost of a cup

Three things: the coffee in the shot, the milk, and for takeaway the cup and lid. A double shot of 18g at £22 a kilo is about 40p. Milk is usually the part that changes most between sizes.

Leave out wages and rent here. They're paid from your gross profit, which is why coffee needs a high GP, usually 75 to 85%.

Why the large feels price rises first

A large uses more milk, so a milk price rise costs it more pence per cup than a small. Check your large prices whenever milk goes up. Our guides on pricing coffee by size and charging for oat milk go through the maths, and the GP calculator works for cakes and food too.
